Yatreda ያጥሬዳ - Kibir by Yatreda

Overview
Gallery
In Amharic, kibir means honour, but it also carries a deeper sense of duty to what came before.
It’s this spirit that guides Yatreda’s presentation. The monochromatic motion portraits are not displayed as digital curiosities but as living continuations of ancient traditions. Each figure depicted is a glorified one remembered, and a memory made present once again.
Solomonic Dynasty
The Solomonic Dynasty traces its lineage through the intimate bonds between mothers and daughters within Ethiopia's Beta Israel community. Chronicles speak of Menelik I, son of Queen of Sheba and King Solomon, bringing the Ark of the Covenant to Ethiopia, accompanied by thousands of travelers from the land of Judea. History is not shaped by distant kings or monumental migrations alone, but by countless individual choices made within families who carry forward the profound responsibility of ancestral memory. Enduring legacies live not only in stone monuments but in the sacred blood that flows from mother to child, connecting each generation in an unbroken chain. Young Love
Newlyweds from Ethiopia's southwestern region blend traditional Anuak garments with contemporary denim, bridging heritage and modernity. Yet their intimate gaze suggests something deeper: while we often mistake cultural artifacts for permanence, the human heart's capacity for love transcends any single tradition or era. Their embrace speaks to love's true timelessness, an eternal force that flourishes across generations. Safe from the Evil Eye
The evil eye is a malevolent force that threatens the innocent through envious gazes. Jewelry can serve as a decoy, deliberately drawing harmful attention away from the vulnerable girl and onto itself, while the mother maintains her watchful presence. Together, they create a sanctuary of protection where innocence can rest undisturbed, embodying the timeless maternal instinct to shield one's child from all forms of harm, both seen and unseen. Yatreda

Yatreda ያጥሬዳ is a family-based collective of artists from Ethiopia, led by creative director Kiya Tadele, who create digital artwork in the style of tizita—a profound sense of nostalgia and longing for the past. Combining childhood musings, oral history, and folk tales with the rich history and legends cherished by modern Ethiopians, Yatreda’s work invites viewers to contemplate the cyclical nature of history.
